Understand what the existing system is really doing
Legacy systems often contain critical business rules, integrations and workarounds that are not captured in formal documentation. Replacing them without understanding those details can create more risk than the old system itself.
Start with the people who use and support the system. Map its high-value workflows, data flows, dependency points, performance issues and failure modes. This identifies what must be protected while improvements are introduced.

- Identify integrations, data dependencies and manual workarounds.
- Rank risks by business impact, security exposure and operational urgency.
Choose the right modernisation path for each component
Not every application needs a full rewrite. Some workloads benefit from infrastructure improvement, others from targeted API enablement, interface renewal, data cleanup or gradual replacement of a particular module.
A component-by-component strategy can deliver useful progress while reducing exposure. It also allows teams to validate the new operating model before moving the most sensitive or complicated parts of the estate.

Data migration, parallel running, user training, support coverage and rollback plans are not afterthoughts. They are what make a modernisation programme safe for the people depending on the system every day.
A staged release process creates checkpoints for quality, adoption and performance. Each stage should leave the organisation with a more stable, supportable position than before.
