Start with a decision, not a dashboard
Dashboards are valuable when they help someone choose, prioritise or intervene sooner. Begin by defining the decision a team needs to make, the signal that should inform it and the action that follows.
This keeps analytics focused on operational or commercial value rather than collecting every available metric without a clear purpose.
- Name the owner of the decision and the cadence at which it is made.
- Define the few measures that indicate progress, risk or opportunity.
- Agree the action that should follow when a measure changes.
Build confidence in the data underneath
Analytical insight is only as dependable as its source data. Establish definitions, ownership, quality checks and refresh expectations so people understand what a number represents and when it should be trusted.
Where data comes from several systems, document the transformation and reconciliation rules. This reduces debate about the number and allows teams to focus on what it means.
Design insight for action and review
A useful report highlights the changes that deserve attention and gives context for what to do next. It should be easy to compare current performance with a relevant baseline or target.
Review analytics regularly with the teams closest to the work. Their feedback reveals whether a measure is useful, missing context or needs a better connection to operational action.
